Most horse owners keep first aid and emergency kits available at home in case of emergencies. However, having a first aid kit in your trailer is just as important. Accidents can happen at any time while traveling. So, before you head off to your next horse show, trail ride, or adventure, be sure your trailer’s emergency first aid kit is packed and up to date.
Wondering what to include without overspending or taking up too much space? Dr. Sue Hamilton shared a practical list during the University of Georgia Master Equine Series. Here’s a breakdown of the essentials:
Basic First Aid Kit Items:
- Stethoscope – Check gut sounds and heart rate
- Thermometer – Monitor your horse’s temperature
- Headlamp – Injuries don’t always happen in daylight
- Saline – For cleaning wounds
- Betadine – Disinfectant for wounds
- Bandage materials – Diapers work well for hoof injuries
- Sterile Wraps/Pads – Protect wounds
- Track Bandages & Standing Wraps – Secure wound coverings or support legs
- Vet Wrap – Holds bandages in place
- Scissors – Cut or remove bandages
- Duct tape – Secure bandages or hoof wraps
- Needles & Syringes – Flush wounds or administer medications
You may also want to include medications in your traveling first aid kit. It is important to consult your veterinarian for prescriptions and administration guidelines. If you are showing horses, know that some medications may be restricted. Be sure to read the show rules and consult your veterinarian.
Medications for First Aid Kit:
- Phenylbutazone (bute)– Common pain reliever, available in paste form for travel
- Neosporin – Topical antibiotic
- Electrolyte paste – Useful for dehydration or heat stress
- Veterinary prescriptions – May include eye ointments or Banamine (pain relief)
